vShield Edge provides features such a firewall, NAT, DHCP and load balancing.
Deploying a vShield Edge instance is pretty simple!
Before doing so you must have vShield Manager installed and licensed (this is now all under one product called vCloud Networking and Security in the latest 5.x versions).
You can confirm this checking the licensing section and also that vShield shows in the solutions section of vSphere client.
Also see here.. vCloud Networking and Security - Installing vShield Manager 5.1. Once you are at this stage you can proceed.
Being able to run multiple instances of VMware View Client can be very useful for a number of reasons.
For myself this is primarily being a contractor I have a corporate virtual desktop with email etc, then I'm working on mutiple customers VMware View environments in the datacenter implementing and testing.
So I need to be able to have them side by side on the same laptop, fortunatley this is achieved very simply..
vCenter must be upgraded first, before adding any ESX/ESXi 4 hosts. ESX 3.5 hosts can be added to vCenter 4. However ESX 4 hosts cannot be added to vCenter 2.5.
1. Check the server hardware you are installing ESX Server 4 onto is supported and on the VMware HCL.
On some occasions it may be required that VMware View virtual desktops require to have different timezones set.
It does not make sense to create different desktop pools for each time zone with a slight change to the master image with the time zone in a snapshot.
Noooo that's far too difficult to maintain! We need another way..
The latest version of vShield which is 5.1, has been named vCloud Networking and Security, which provides firewall protection, traffic analysis, and network perimeter services to protect your vCenter Server virtual infrastructure.
vShield Manager is the centralized management component of vShield. vShield Manager is used to monitor and push configurations to vShield App, vShield Endpoint, and vShield Edge instances. vShield Manager is a virtual appliance deployed as an OVA file downloaded from VMware.
Once you have installed vShield Manager and linked it to vCenter Server you will see vCloud Networking and Security appears under the licensing section (which used to show 3 seperate products vShield App, vShield Edge and vShield Endpoint).
